Why Source Quality Matters
- What it is: The fossilized remains of microscopic shells created by one-celled plants called diatoms.
- Food grade is rare: Out of 600 deposits in the US, only 4 are considered food grade by FDA standards. Other food grade deposits may contain more sediment and clay, which can clog the pores of the fossilized shells and reduce effectiveness.
- Consistent shape: The diatom must be tubular with holes in the walls. Perma-Guard, with more than 40 years of experience, uses a grade of fossil shell flour that is extremely pure.
- Fresh water source: Fresh water diatoms form a harder, less fragile shell. Salt water deposits contain a mix of diatom species with inconsistent shapes and sediments.
